Massage During the Summer Heat

Massage during the intense Texas summer heat can be very beneficial for many reasons. Some might think it would be uncomfortable to receive massage during the summer since you feel more swollen and sticky, but it can decrease inflammation and have a cooling effect on the body.

When you are relaxed and in your “rest and digestion” state that massage can put you in, your core temperature drops. This is why you sometimes feel cold during a massage, but this is welcomed when you’re feeling overheated.

In the summer, many suffer from increased discomfort and swelling because of the heat, humidity, and buildup of fluids in the body. Massage helps increase circulation which reduces swelling in your joints and limbs. Lymphatic massage helps to improve drainage and circulation, minimizing discomfort from heat-induced water retention.

Some people feel the need to up their amount of exercise in order to maintain that “beach body”. Extra exertion can increase the number of injuries and cause more soreness than in the cooler months. Whether from hiking, sports, or gardening, massage is a good way to keep your hard working muscles in good shape for that extra movement and decreases the likelihood of getting injured.

Stress can also be higher in the summer due to picking up extra shifts in your work to cover colleagues’ holidays. Your kids may also be on that seemingly never-ending school holiday, which comes with more activities or travel than you’re used to. Massage releases “feel good” chemicals in your body that allow you to relax and unwind. This is also helpful if you struggle with anxiety or depression.

By stimulating blood flow and supporting detoxification, massage can leave you feeling refreshed and revitalized in this seemingly inescapable summer heat.
